Useful info for prospective members!

Hi prospective members!

So you’ve been wondering how a typical Toastmasters meeting is ran?
Here’s how it goes.
The meetings start at 17h45 every Tuesday.

The first part of the meeting consists of four short roles taken by four people, who speak briefly in front of the audience.
These roles are 1 to 2 minutes long. They are:
1- Moment of reflection: a member reflects over a topic, an important event, etc…
2- Moment of humour: a member shares a joke with the audience
3- Public speaking tip: a member shares a public speaking tip that can help everybody improve
4- Toast: a member gives a toast

After the short roles, comes the improvised speeches. We call them “table topics”.
This is a challenging yet fun part of the meeting. Three questions are asked (they’re usually fun and interesting), and three random people are invited to answer these questions on the spot, without any preparation. Adrenaline shoots to the roof here! There’s a lot of laughter too! Table topics are a great way to challenge your creativity and to become a pro at impromptu speeches!

At 18h30 we take a 10 minutes break during which people socialize and enjoy free goodies (juice, cookies, coffee, etc…).

The second part of the meeting consists of three prepared speeches.
In this part, three people deliver a 5 to 7 min speech.  These speeches are prepared in advance (usually days or weeks in advance).

The third and last part of the meeting is the evaluations part.
Three people evaluate the three speakers by saying what they did well, what they can improve for next time, and give an overall evaluation of the speeches. This is a valuable part since we all are interested in getting feedback and improving.

The meeting ends at 20h. People socialize right after, and everybody feels energized to SMASH the rest of their week!

Tip of the week 16 August 2016

Speak Slowly. Pause between sentences and before key points. People want to hear what you’re saying so don’t rush it.

McGill Toastmasters Meeting #722

Remember last week when I said that meeting #721 was smooth, soft, and silky? Yea, well, meeting #722 was made of fire! The room was packed, the speakers were amazing, and it felt like a real party at the 688 Sherbrooke Street West, Room 1559!

Here are some pictures:
File_001 (2)
Elijah our toastmaster! Great job Elijah, it was his first time and he did it so well! He’s very natural and welcoming.

File_000 (2)
Angela delivering her speech about how to present a speech with PPT slides. She’s simply a captivating and powerful speaker. You can’t even detect any kind of nervousness in her when she speaks. Great content too!

Willem! Winning the best speech evaluator price. He’s too good not to win.
File_001 (1)

Marna our general evaluator of this meeting! We all like her warmth and her valuable feedback. She always brings something new to the table! When she speaks in public she seems to me like a mix of an articulate lawyer/opera singer. You should come and check her out! She’s gooood!

Willem? Too shy to accept your winner’s price? 😉

File_002 (1)

Willem in action! He’s the one who comes with the most unpredictable jokes or comments! Always a pleasure to listen to you my friend!

File_003 (1)

Sarah! Evaluating one of the speakers.

File_000 (3)
(Note: For the people who weren’t there yesterday, all of Mehrnoosh’s photos  were taken while she was delivering her prepared speech (except the one in which she got her “best speaker’s” price). But for the fun of it we tweaked her story a little bit, which means that the comments were just created.)
Here she comes!!! Mehrnoosh, the winner/best speaker! In this picture she’s deploying her stuff (cloths, mirrors, drawings…). We all thought she was making herself ready to settle down in life, and continue living the rest of her life in the middle of this room. Why not!… who am I to judge?

File_003 (2)
As you can see, the deployment took a while. She’s still unpacking… Which is totally understandable when you move in…

File_006 (1)
Of course, after deploying her stuff and settling in, she wants to be presentable! Here she’s making sure she looks good in front of her audience.  I appreciate her honouring us!

File_004 (2)
After she made sure she’s confident with her looks, it’s time for her to salute the crowd!!! “Heil Mehrnoosh”!!!

File_005 (2)
Mehrnoosh knows she’s too cool for school 😛 . By the way, Nadal, you hair needs to be more green, and a brighter kind of green! It will look great!

Here she’s telling us about her experience when she still was an international music producer living in Hawaii.

File_008 (1)
I appreciate self-expression! Here she’s showing us that she doesn’t care about the trophy! She just wants to smash it!! All she cares about is owning the winner’s “best speech” price, that our beloved president, Alain Guillot, will grant her.

There you go Mehrnoosh! You got the price! 😀

File_005 (1)
Dave our timer! Still looking like an indie-rock artist (more like the bassist or keyboardist of the band).

File_004 (1)
Jennifer! it was her first role as a grammarian! she did great!

Sapan! He’s just amazing. He won a recognition price from Toastmasters International. Great job sir!

Alain Guillot our president, chairing the evening.

Cheryl! :)) She was the table topics winner! Cheryl is funny, entertaining/enchanting, and it’s amazing how quick minded she can be.  Too bad I missed her improv.

McGill Toastmasters Meeting # 721

If I were to choose three words that qualify our last meeting, they would be: Smooth, social (as usual), and silky.
Here are some pictures.

McGill Toastmasters
Linda Chang winning the best speech of the evening by default.
The two other speakers got disqualified as they crossed their time limit.
All speeches were delivered smoothly and silkily :D!

McGill Toastmasters

Kate Stern! She was the best speech evaluator.
I thought I would smash both you and Alain in my own
reality. But my own reality is not reality in factual actuality,
as it’s you that SMASHED us all! haha! 😀

McGill Toastmasters

Out of no where, a guest, Dasha, shyly volunteered to give a
table topics speech (challenging short improv), and she won!! hehe.
We noticed that this member-to-be is a natural speaker. There’s
no doubt she will go far!

McGill Toastmasters
Experienced toastmaster Angela animating
the whole evening. Too bad this picture is a bit blurry…
Better ones will be coming.

Nidal our grammarian! It was the
first time he took this role and did great!
He’s a free spirit too.

Dave our general evaluator, who, like our
grammarian, took this role for the first time
and did great too! You look like a
librarian/indie rocker/chef/tattoo artist.
Congrats! You’re welcome ;P

Willem! Smart, clever, and witty in a unique way.
I’m sure he’d always be appreciated
as a table topics master (hosting the short

Gaetane our chairperson! She’s always
colorful, always energized and warm, and sets a nice
tone to the meetings!

Last but not least, Jonny Sit! Kick starting
the meeting!

Tip of the week 26 July 2016

By: John Konkov

Do your speech by recalling your points with imagery in your mind, that makes

it easier to remember what you have to say.

Meeting #720

Very nice evening! A few last minute changes happened in the agenda, but that doesn’t stop a McGill Toastmasters member to rise up to the occasion and take the challenge of accepting a role for the evening! And that’s part of the learning process.
If you’re interested in building your confidence to speak in public, and in becoming friends with amazing people, I suggest you consider the McGill Toastmasters club.

McGill Toastmasters - Willem

Here’s Angela shaking the hand of Willem! Willem was the best table topics (improvisations) evaluator. Even though he looks very humble in the picture, do not underestimate his fun and very astute evaluations! Go Willem!

McGill Toastmasters (Montreal) - Angela

Bonnie was winner for the best prepared speech evaluation! Good job Bonnie! Always a pleasure listening to your valuable advice.

McGill toastmasters - Yvon

And finally, The Unstoppable one! Yvon winning the best prepared speech award. Yvon, you’re on fire!
